(Malaysiakini) Thousands of people would be mobilised for a mass protest against the shocking increase in fuel prices at the iconic KLCC Twin Towers on July 12. Organisers Coalition Against Inflation (Protes) hopes to gather 100,000 people to call on the government to reduce fuel prices to its original levels before the hike today. "We believe that with such a drastic hike in fuel prices, we will get the support of the masses.

"This is not similar to the Bersih rally. It's going to be bigger. The impact would be bigger," Protes coordinator Dr Hatta Ramli told a press conference today.

Hatta explained that the KLCC Twin Towers was selected as the rally point because it was the headquarters of Malaysia's oil company Petronas.

He argued that Malaysia was an oil producing country and record profits from Petronas should be used to relieve the public from being burdened by the fuel hike.

“We have five weeks to mobilise the crowd and the government has five weeks to react to the people’s demands (to revert fuel prices to their original levels),” he said.

In a highly unpopular move, our lovely or indeed trying so hard to be lovely, the once Mr So-Called "Clean" wannabe PM made a statement claiming his Government is not making an attempt to be popular.

Mr So-Called CLEAN (but dont know which part) said:
"We try our best. This isn't an attempt to be popular. (But) we have to think in the best interest of the people," he told reporters during a 50-minute press conference held at his office in Putrajaya this afternoon.

"We can't satisfy everyone. Anything that involves people paying more, naturally they are going to be unhappy. (I hope) they will understand the circumstances we are working under," he added. "Insyallah (God willing), I hope they will not demonstrate over this," he said.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi also revealed an increase in electricity tariffs effective July 1. Electricity tariffs to raise by up to 20%.

Am I dumb or what? I simply do not see how this move will be popular? Popular for what rubbish? How is this in the best interest of the people? The Bolehland Daily: Breaking News! Fuel hike: 78 sen more to RM2.70 per litre

(Malaysiakini) The government has just announced that petrol price will go up by 78 sen at midnight - a 40.6 percent jump from RM1.92 per litre to RM2.70. The price of diesel will go up RM1, or 63.3 percent - from RM1.58 per litre to RM2.58.

The price hikes are among government measures to cut the spiralling bill for oil subsidies, which is expected to amount to RM56 billion this year.

At a press conference held at 5pm, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi also announced that the government plans to offer rebates to motorists to offset the fuel price increase.
Under the scheme, vehicles below 2000cc will receive a RM625 rebate annually - to compensate for 800 litres of fuel used under the new price.

Motorcyclists will be given a rebate of RM120. The money will be paid by postal order.
Rebate will be paid when motorists renew the road-tax for their vehicles.

The government is expected to save RM4 billion under this new subsidy restructure.
If petrol is to be sold at full market prices, it could be as high as almost RM4 a litre - about 100 percent above current levels.

However the government is slowly expected to head towards totally abolishing the fuel subsidy.

(malaysiakini) Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad should be hauled up before the royal commission into the ‘Lingam tape’ for ‘contempt against its members’.
“I am surprised that, as a former prime minister, Mahathir has gone beyond the limits and latitude of criticism of the report of the commission,” said Karpal, who is also Bukit Gelugor MP.

The royal commission has named Mahathir as one of six prominent personalities who warrant further investigation for allegedly compromising judicial integrity. Responding to this, Mahathir claimed that the commission possibly was set up “in order to find something to pin on me, to drag me to court etc and generally humiliate me”.

(malaysiakini) DAP national chairperson Karpal Singh has told Gerakan acting president Koh Tsu Koon to heed public opinion and accept the electoral defeat that his party sustained in the general election on March 8.


Koh should not continue to claim credit for “the few good things” done during his 18-year tenure as Penang chief minister, said Karpal (right), but accept the reality that the days of his “pomp and splendour have come and gone”.

He claimed that Koh has been interfering in the state through Gerakan members, to belittle the achievements of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

“Koh should cease and desist from interfering in state political governance. It’s the prerogative of Penangites, given to Lim to govern the state towards its own destiny,” he said

Karpal was commenting on recent criticism of the state government by Koh’s former political secretary Mark Ooi Swee Hing.

Ooi accused Lim’s government of riding on a success story fashioned by Koh by claiming credit over the two high-profile investments - the RM1.2 billion investment by Japanese printed circuit board manufacturer Ibiden Co Ltd and RM115 million by American Honeywell, a global leader in the aerospace industry.






‘Puppet chief minister’
Karpal also described Koh as having been a puppet chief minister, whose administration had accommodated the demands and commands of Umno, instead of protecting the rights and interests of the people of Penang. “By virtue of having more seats in the state assembly, it was Umno calling the shots and was filching many prized projects during Koh’s time,” said Karpal, who is the Bukit Gelugor MP.

He reminded Koh (left) to be grateful to Lim for coming to his defence when Umno members openly demonstrated against him during the Tanjung Umno divisional meeting presided by party president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2006.

“By then Koh should have stepped down gracefully, but he didn’t. Then the Penang voters had to (make sure that he did) so. Thus he should not interfere, and should retire and ride into sunset in grace and dignity,” said Karpal.
